Game Description

Using a behind-the-skier perspective, Slalom has you blazing down snow-covered mountains while maneuvering past gates. In a slalom race, the idea is to ski past these flags, or gates, on a rotating basis -- pass one on the left, the next on the right, the next on the left and so forth.

Slalom features five course settings for the downhill skier including Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Advanced with Wide Gates and Completely Ridiculous Slopes. While these slopes look the same, the number of hazards and locations of the gates differ. For instance, the Beginner Slope features the occasional stump and slick spot while the Completely Ridiculous Slope is laced with these hazards with gates located in hard to reach places.

As the name implies, the Advanced with Wide Gates course places the gates to the far left or right side of the screen and requires a higher degree of maneuverability. The various slopes can be played in any order; for example, there's no requirement to have to play the Beginner Slope before you move on to the Intermediate Slope with its tougher challenge and additional hazards.

If you complete the course and avoid disqualification (caused by passing the gates incorrectly or falling over a stump), you're shown an overall time score. While cruising down the hill, you can also lower or increase the skier's speed but, it's slippery out there so be careful when skiing at he highest speed!

Do you have what it takes to become a championship downhill racer? Put on your goggles and find out in Slalom.

Roots & Influences

While not the first downhill winter ski game for the Commodore 64, Slalom is one of the earliest. Most have similar structure due to the rules of the sport - ski downhill and make the gates.
