Sly Cooper is the main protagonist of the Sly Cooper video game series (the first game in the series is known as Sly Raccoon in Europe, but the character's name remains the same in both versions) as the main character and hero of three platform games developed by Sucker Punch Productions for the Sony PlayStation 2. He is voiced by Kevin Miller in all three games. In the Japanese releases of the first two games, he is voiced by Tomokazu Seki.

Story

Sly is a raccoon who is descended from a long line of master thieves. When Sly was eight years old, his father was killed by a ruthless gang called the Fiendish Five. The gang stole the "Thievius Raccoonus," a book containing the Cooper family's thieving techniques and moves. Sly witnessed the slaying of his family. The police found a devastated Sly hiding in a cupboard, and he was sent to an orphanage. There he met Bentley, a genius turtle, and Murray, a comically self-confident and brawny hippopotamus. He is very attracted to the Interpol officer Carmelita.

Sly's arch enemy is Clockwerk, a mysterious robotic owl. Clockwerk is revealed to have been hunting Sly's family line for thousands of years. In the pages of the "Thievius Raccoonus," Sly noticed that in each picture, there was a shadowy outline of a large owl. Clockwerk's hunt provoked his decision to replace his body with machinery, giving him immortality. It is also revealed that Clockwerk spared Sly's life in the attack on his father to prove that the Cooper Clan would be unable to be great thieves without the "Thievius Raccoonus." In the first game of the series, Clockwerk serves as the final boss, as well as the one "pulling the strings" in the end. Sly and Carmelita team up to take down Clockwerk. Sure enough, the maniacal owl meets his end, and is left in pieces at the top of an active volcano in Russia. Carmelita finds him and then gives ten seconds to escape. At the last second, he kisses her, but only to handcuff her and take the key. When the game ends it shows a cutscene of Clockwerk opening one of his eyes, followed by Murray screaming in terror.

The second game, "Sly 2: Band of Thieves," focuses on a new set of villains: the Klaww Gang, who have stolen the pieces of Clockwerk's body, and Sly's attempts to recover them. The Klaww Gang is led by Arpeggio, a flightless bird who wants Clockwerk's body so he can fly and be immortal. However, the real villain of the game is Constable Neyla, who seems to be Sly's ally until she betrays them in Episode 3. Neyla, in service of the Klaww Gang and in cahoots with Arpeggio, betrays her supposed partner and takes over the newly-assembled body of Clockwerk, creating a new monster named Clock-La. She then kills her former mentor Arpeggio, and begins a rampage with a trance-inducing 'hypno-light'. Sly and the gang destroy Clock-La and Bentley takes out the Hate Chip, the source of Clockwerk that kept himself alive for hundreds of years. While taking out the hate chip, Bentley's legs are crushed by Clock-La's mouth. He is then rendered parapalegic. After the hate chip is recovered Carmelita destroys it. After it is smashed the pieces of Clockwerk disentegrate around them. After Clockwerk's body is destroyed Carmelita begins to arrest the game. Sly then offers to go willingly if Carmelita allows Bentley and Murray to get away. However, after she has arrested him, and he's being flown away, he makes a daring escape.

The third game, "Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves", takes place roughly a year after "Sly 2." Instead of Clockwerk, Sly's main enemy is now Dr. M, a mysterious mandrill scientist who attempts to claim the Cooper family vault for himself. Sly gains four more allies in this game, some of which are familiar -- yet not so friendly -- characters from previous games. Sly and the gang must use all their thieving power at their disposal to crack open the raccoon's birthright before the nefarious Dr. M takes it for his own.

Immediately after Sly's exploration of his family's wealth, he encounters Dr.M, which serves as the final boss. After Sly defeats Dr.M, he fires a bolt at Carmelita. Sly jumps into its path to save Carmelita. When he wakes up, Sly fakes amnesia and Carmelita Fox tells him that he's Constable Cooper, her partner. The end includes the gang splitting up; Murray takes the van and becomes a stock car racer, Sly continues alongside Carmelita under his given identity, and Bently and Penelope fall in love with each other, and reinforce the previously broken Cooper vault. After the credits sequence, you see Bently spy on Sly from a rooftop. Sly turns around and winks playfully. Bentley comments, "That sneaky devil."

Current status

During the assault on Dr. M's fortress, Sly is almost killed by one of the doctor's genetic monsters. Thinking he is about to die, Sly regrets never having told Carmelita how he feels about her. After surviving and nearly defeating Dr. M, Sly saves Carmelita's life by jumping in front of a laser blast meant for her. After she defeats Dr. M, Carmelita discovers that the shock gave Sly amnesia. After Sly asks who he is and where he is, Carmelita lies, saying that he is her partner. In a clip after the game's credits, Bentley (who is coupled with Penelope and has rescued part of the Cooper Vault) is shown spying on Sly and Carmelita dancing on a balcony. As Bentley zooms in on them, Sly winks at the screen, leaving Bentley to quote, "That sneaky devil," and implying that Sly is faking his amnesia so he could finally pursue a relationship with Carmelita. He also says he is building a time machine, leading to the possibility of a fourth Sly Cooper game. The 2009 video game inFamous shows a movie called Sly Cooper 4 and had a small icon from the series on a shopping bag indicating that a fourth Sly Cooper game might be in the works but this is unknown.

Abilities

Years of training have given Sly great agility and reflexes, allowing him to perform feats that few can equal. In addition, he has learned every ability detailed in the Thievius Raccoonus, including things like balancing on the tops of sharp points, rope and pole climbing, invisibility, and running on wires. Oddly enough, he cannot use the ability to jump on top of higher buildings as seen by enemies and Carmelita Fox.

Sly has also been seen using a mounted cannon and operating a gondola. He also uses items from ThiefNet, such as smoke bombs. Sly can also use his binocucom for reconnaissance.

Also, at the near end of Sly 3, he learns a new ability created by his father: Laser Sliding. This move is used in a way to defeat the evil Dr. M.

Staff

Sly's primary weapon in the games is a Crosier, a ceremonial staff which was a Cooper family heirloom for generations. It bears a striking resemblance to the Egyptian Khopesh, likely due to the fact that the earliest known member of the Cooper Clan was from ancient Egypt.

In the last game, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, it is stated in "The Making of Sly" that the staff was supposed to represent a question mark.[citation needed] Sly's crosier primarily serves as a blunt weapon, but it was also utilized like a zip line. The crosier was also upgradable, and using stolen currency from the ThiefNet, items such as an electric uppercut could be purchased. It also has the power to unlock the Cooper Vault.

Awards

Sly Cooper won "Best New Character" at the Game Developer's Conference for 2002.

GameSpy placed "Sly 2: Band of Thieves" as #23 on their list of best Playstation 2 games of all time.
