(engineering) A microsensor integrated with signal-conditioning electronics such as analog-to-digital converters on a single silicon chip to form an integrated microelectromechanical component that can process information itself or communicate with an embedded microprocessor. Also known as intelligent sensor.

A sensor that includes a microprocessor that conditions the signals before transmission to the control network. It filters out unwanted noise and compensates for errors before sending the data. Some sensors can be custom programmed to produce alerts on their own when critical limits are reached. See sensor.
