Snezhinsk (Russian: Сне́жинск) is a closed town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. It was founded in 1957, and was known as Chelyabinsk-70 until 1991. Town status was granted in 1993. Population: 50,451 (2002 Census).[1] Snezhinsk is also a sister city of Livermore, CA, United States.
Snezhinsk is one of two centers of Russian nuclear program (the other one is Sarov) and is built around a major scientific research institute—"All-Russian Scientific Research Center of Technical Physics—Federal Nuclear Center".
In 2009, the city became a place of mass demonstrations against actions by the local policemen who unlawfully arrested a teenager, beat him with a hammer and shot him to death [1].
