I don't know if it is now (oh, the kids these days) but it used to be used with the word hunt, as SNIPE HUNT, which meant sending someone after a non-existent something.

You have to be a very good shot. The term 'sniper' comes from the expert marksman that were able to shoot the small aquatic birds with very good camouflage.

Today, most references to a snipe hunt is a joke. Someone may tell you to go out at night with a pillow case and make clucking sounds that a snipe will run to you. If you are fool enough to do that or get someone to do it more power to you.
