A soft box is a 5 sided box made of white cloth. A light is placed behind it facing into the box. ( all of this is just outside of camera view) The subject matter is on the other side of the box. The light shining through the box is defused by the cloth making it appear as soft light on the subject. ( No hard shadows.) This is often called "Window light."
