Biography

Like a lot of girls born into the upper-middle-class suburb of Pasadena, CA, Sophia Bush caught a whiff of the Hollywood air just down the road and took an interest in acting at an early age. After getting her feet wet in school plays at the Westridge School for Girls, she graduated in 2000 and enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she majored in journalism and minored in theater. It was that minor interest that proved to be her greatest passion, however, and in 2002, at the age of 20, she scored her first movie gig with a small role in National Lampoon's Van Wilder.

Another onscreen role would follow in 2003, and a much more substantial one. Bush was cast as sassy cheerleader Brooke Davis in the WB series One Tree Hill. She left school to work full-time on the series, which paid off when One Tree Hill proved to be a huge hit. In addition to the professional success that the show brought her, the program also featured Bush's onscreen romance with co-star Chad Michael Murray -- which soon turned into a real-life love affair. The two were wed in 2005, but unfortunately, the union was not to last. After just five months, the two separated and eventually divorced, though they remained co-stars on the series.

Bush took the personal hit in stride, continuing to act in additional projects such as Supercross: The Movie and the popular 2006 comedy John Tucker Must Die. Bush also proved to have a knack for tense and scary subject matter, from a recurring part on the series Nip/Tuck to a starring role in the 2006 horror flick Stay Alive. In 2007, she appeared in an even bigger horror movie as the female lead in a remake of The Hitcher, starring opposite veteran actor Sean Bean.

While building up her impressive acting resumé, Bush still didn't lose the interest in journalism that she pursued in college, working as an assignment editor for Annenberg TV News when she wasn't on-set. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

Early life

Bush, an only child, was born and raised in Pasadena, California[1] to Charles William Bush, an advertising and celebrity photographer, and Maureen, a photography studio manager.[3] Bush has Italian ancestry,[4] and attended Westridge School for Girls (Pasadena), as well as the University of Southern California. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority,[5] where she served as Social Chair.

In 2000, she was the Tournament of Roses Parade Queen. Bush attended USC for three years before landing the role of Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill (2003).

Career

Bush made her first big screen appearance in the comedy feature film Van Wilder. Following, she made appearances in several television shows, such as Nip/Tuck, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Punk'd. She was cast as Kate Brewster in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, but was replaced by Claire Danes because the director thought she was too young for the role.[6][7]

In 2003, she got the role of Brooke Davis in the CW television series One Tree Hill. Her character, Brooke Davis, evolved from a trouble-making vixen to a fiercely loyal friend and a fan favorite. After Bush gained mainstream fame, she became a spokesperson for high-profile brands. She posed on the cover of several mainstream magazines such as Entertainment Weekly, Lucky, Maxim, Glamour and InStyle and has had several endorsement deals, one of her latest endorsements is for Op's fall campaign OPen Campus.[8][9][10] Bush and her One Tree Hill co-stars were endorsers for MasterCard, K-Mart, Chevy Cobalt and Cingular wireless.[11][12][13]

In July 2006, Bush starred in the 20th Century Fox feature film John Tucker Must Die alongside Jesse Metcalfe and Brittany Snow. The film was a commercial success grossing over 60 million worldwide. She also starred in Buena Vista Pictures' thriller film, Stay Alive alongside Frankie Muniz and Adam Goldberg. The film opened at #3 in the U.S. box office,[14] and is considered a box office success due to its production budget of 9 million dollars. In 2007, Bush starred in the remake of the 1986 classic horror film, The Hitcher as Grace Andrews. The film was critically successful among most reviewers. The Times gave it four stars and praised the film. Bush also starred in Francois Velle's The Narrows with Kevin Zegers, Eddie Cahill and Vincent D'Onofrio. She played the beautiful, intelligent and self-assured Kathy Popovich. Filming began in New York on April 24, 2008 and is due for a late 2009 release date. The film is based on Tim McLoughlin's novel Heart of the Old Country. Bush also stars in the feature film Table for Three, which centers on a suddenly single young man, Scott Teller (Brandon Routh), who invites a "perfect couple," Mary and Ryan (Bush and Jesse Bradford), to share his large apartment. When Teller meets the girl of his dreams, Leslie (Jennifer Morrison), he believes that Ryan and Mary are intentionally sabotaging his chances with her because they desperately need him in their life to hold their dysfunctional relationship together.[15][16]

Personal life

On April 16, 2005, Bush married actor Chad Michael Murray, her One Tree Hill co-star. They dated for almost two years before they were married in Santa Monica. They announced their separation on September 26, 2005 after five months of marriage when Bush filed court papers to have their marriage annulled citing fraud. In December 2006, Bush and Murray's divorce was made final.[17]

On October 27, 2008, amid rumors of Bush dating fellow One Tree Hill co-star James Lafferty, Murray confirmed the romance. "[Sophia and I] are both professional and mature enough to get through it," he said. "And now it's just easy. We're just friends. And she's got James, and James and I are friends."[18][19] As of October 2009, Bush is reported to be dating fellow One Tree Hill co-star Austin Nichols.[20]

Bush has been supportive of Barack Obama as President. In February 2008, she made several appearances in Texas in support of the Obama campaign in the Texas Presidential primary election. She was joined in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Waco by fellow actor Adam Rodriguez. Touring mostly college campuses, they urged young voters to get involved politically.[21][22][23]

In April 2009, along with stars including Sarah Chalke, Jason Lewis, Alicia Silverstone, Jane Lynch and Lance Bass, Bush appeared in a video on Funny or Die called "A Gaythering Storm", which parodied a NOM video objecting to same-sex marriage.[24]

In late April 2007, Bush ranked #90 in the UK's popular men's magazine FHM, in their countdown of 100 Sexiest Women of 2007. Subsequently, she ranked #89 in the US edition of the same magazine.
