A set of lines on, between, above and below which notes of music are written. A five-line staff has been the most widely used type since early 13th-century north French MSS containing polyphony; a four-line staff has been used for plainchant since the 12th century and a six-line one was used by some early theorists and scribes. Except for plainsong, the five-line staff became standardized during the 17th century. See also Clef, Leger Line, Notation and Tablature.
