Stanley Tucci

Who2 Profiles:

Stanley Tucci, Actor / Filmmaker

  • Born: 11 November 1960
  • Birthplace: Peekskill, New York
  • Best Known As: Nigel, the fashion consultant in The Devil Wears Prada

Stanley Tucci's rather fascinating film career began in 1985 with a tiny part as a mob soldier in Prizzi's Honor, and for awhile he was cast as swarthy heavies and jittery oddballs: Lucky Luciano in Billy Bathgate (1991, with Dustin Hoffman), a dog catcher in the shaggy dog story Beethoven (1992), the revenge-minded mugger Muerte in the spy comedy Undercover Blues (1993, with Randy Quaid). That all changed with Big Night, his charming and nostaligic 1996 film about brothers struggling to save their authentic Italian restaurant. Tucci co-wrote, co-directed, produced, and starred in the film, and it took him off the mobster beat and put him on the map as an art-house favorite. He directed the farce The Imposters (1998) and the eccentric Joe Gould's Secret (2000, based on a story by Joseph Mitchell, with Tucci also starring as Mitchell). He also continued to act, winning warmer (and larger) parts like Nigel, the fashion consultant in The Devil Wears Prada (with Anne Hathaway) and a big role as a frustrated airport administrator in Steven Spielberg's shaggy tourist story The Terminal. In 2009 Tucci played the husband of jovial chef Julia Child in Julie and Julia (with Meryl Streep as Julia). That same year Tucci returned to the creepy in a big way, playing a child killer in The Lovely Bones and winning an Academy Award nomination for his efforts.

Some sources give 11 January 1960 as Stanley Tucci's day of birth. We believe, based on magazine articles and other sources, that 11 November is correct. He was born in Peekskill, New York and raised in Katonah, New York... Tucci married his wife, Kate, in 1995; she died of cancer in May of 2009. They have three daughters: Isabel, Nicolo, and Camilla... His sister Christine Tucci (b. 1967) is also an actor... Tucci has a degree from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Purchase. The school is in Westchester County, just north of New York City.

Biography

Like many another contemporary movie and TV favorite, Stanley Tucci is a graduate of the drama department at SUNY-Purchase. Tucci made his film bow in 1985's Prizzi's Honor, after which he specialized in playing lowlifes and scuzzbags, despite his offscreen credentials as a loyal friend and loving family man. Some of his more memorable appearances were as Rick Pinzolo in TV's Wiseguy (1987-1989), a minor-league thug named Vernon in Beethoven (1992), and a Middle-Eastern assassin in The Pelican Brief (1993). Tucci acquired a fan following of sorts for his slimy year-long role of Richard Cross on the weekly TV series Murder One (1995).

In 1996, Tucci broke loose from his established screen persona by playing an ambitious Italian-American restaurateur in Big Night, the most delightfully "gastronomic" film since Like Water for Chocolate. The art-house favorite was a sheer labor of love for Tucci, who served as its producer, co-wrote its script with his cousin Joe Tropiano, and shared directorial duties with his friend Campbell Scott. Tucci again directed two years later with The Impostors, a farcical comedy that cast him and longtime friend Oliver Platt as two stowaways on an ocean liner. Unlike Big Night, however, the film did not do well with audiences or critics. After starring in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1998) as Puck and In Too Deep (1999) as a police supervisor, Tucci again stepped behind the camera, this time to direct Joe Gould's Secret (2000). A historical drama about an eccentric man (Ian Holm) living on the streets of Greenwich Village, it received a very enthusiastic reception at the 2000 Sundance Festival, where it premiered. The early 2000s seemed to be a winning period for the versatile actor, with Tucci also taking home the Best Supporting Actor in a television movie award for his role in Conspiracy (2001). That same year he appeared in America's Sweethearts as an intense movie mogul. He continued doing solid work even when the finished films were sometimes lacking. He played in the Jennifer Lopez hit Maid in Manhattan, Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition, the American remake of Shall We Dance?, and landed his largest role in a major Hollywood production when Steven Spielberg cast him as the ambitious, officious manager of The Terminal. Tucci lent his voice to the animated film Robots in 2005, and the next year earned solid notices for his work as a fashion magazine editor loyal to the diva editor in chief Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

The highly-respected character actor continued to work steadily in a variety of projects, but a pair of high-profile supporting roles in 2009 earned him strong reviews and awards consideration. As the husband to Julia Child in Julie & Julia, Tucci got to work opposite Meryl Streep yet again in another box-office hit, but it was his creepy turn as a child killer in the big screen adaptation of The Lovely Bones that earned him Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominations. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Early life

Tucci, an Italian American,[1][2][3] was born in Peekskill, New York, the son of Joan (née Tropiano), a secretary and writer, and Stanley Tucci, Sr., an art teacher at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York.[4][5] His sister is actress Christine Tucci, and his cousin is the screenwriter and retired history teacher Joseph Tropiano.[6] He grew up in Katonah, New York, and attended John Jay High School. Tucci played on the John Jay soccer team and baseball teams; his main interest lay in the school's drama club, where he and fellow actor and high school buddy, Campbell Scott, son of actor George C. Scott, gave well-received performances at many of John Jay's drama club productions. Tucci attended SUNY Purchase, and completed his B.F.A. degree after four years in the school's Conservatory of Theatre Arts.

Career

Tucci made his Broadway debut in The Queen and the Rebels on September 30, 1982. His film debut was in Prizzi's Honor (1985). Tucci is known for his work in films such as The Pelican Brief, Kiss of Death, Road to Perdition and Big Night, and in the television series Murder One as the mysterious Richard Cross. Big Night (1996), which he co-wrote with his cousin Joseph Tropiano, starred in, and co-directed with Campbell Scott, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film also featured his sister Christine and mother, who wrote a cookbook for the film. It won him and Tropiano the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. He's typically cast in supporting roles such as the sidekick or the villain, but has had the lead in two films, both romantic comedies: A Modern Affair (1995) and The Whole Shebang (2001).

He has been nominated three times for Golden Globes, and won twice – for his title role in Winchell (1998), and for his supporting role as Adolph Eichmann in Conspiracy (2001), both for HBO films. He also received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Winchell. He was nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as Best Actor in a Play for his role as Johnny in the 2002 revival of Terrence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.

In July 2006, Tucci made an appearance on the USA Network TV series Monk, in a performance that earned him a 2007 Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor – Comedy Series. Tucci's TV series, the medical drama 3 lbs., debuted on CBS in the 10:00 pm EDT time slot on November 14, 2006. It was canceled on November 30, 2006 due to low ratings. He can be heard as the voice over in the AT&T Wireless "Raising the Bar" marketing campaign. Tucci also played Nigel in the screen adaption of The Devil Wears Prada alongside Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway. In 2007, Tucci had a recurring role in medical drama ER. In 2009, Tucci again starred opposite Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia playing husband Paul Child to her Julia Child.

That same year, Tucci portrayed George Harvey, a pedophile and serial killer of young girls, in The Lovely Bones, Peter Jackson's adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel, for which he received high critical praise and Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. To prepare for the role, he consulted with retired FBI profiler John Douglas.[7]

In 2010, Tucci directed a revival of the Ken Ludwig play Lend Me a Tenor on Broadway, starring Tony Shalhoub.[8] Tucci played Dr. Abraham Erskine in Captain America: The First Avenger.[9]

In July 2010, it was announced that Tucci will direct an upcoming comedy entitled Mommy & Me starring Meryl Streep and Tina Fey as mother and daughter.[10]

In the 2011 movie Margin Call, Stanley Tucci portrayed Eric Dale, one of the fired employees who works in risk management.

In February 2011 it was reported that Tucci had been cast as the villain in Jack the Giant Killer.[11]

On May 9, 2011, it was announced that Tucci will play the role of Caesar Flickerman in the upcoming The Hunger Games film. On May 15, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Tucci also has joined the cast of Gambit, a remake of a 1966 film, which stars Colin Firth.

Personal life

Tucci married social worker Kate Tucci in 1995. They had three children: twins Isabel Concetta and Nicolo Robert (born in 2000) and Camilla (born in 2002). Kate Tucci also had two children from a previous marriage whom the actor raised.[12] He and his wife were separated between 2003 and 2004, during which time he dated Edie Falco. Kate Tucci died of breast cancer in April 2009.[13] Tucci told the New York Post, "My wife was an extraordinary person who showed us all what great strength is."[14]

In October 2011, Tucci became engaged to English literary agent Felicity Blunt, the sister of Tucci's The Devil Wears Prada co-star Emily Blunt, who introduced the couple.[15]

Tucci was co-owner of the Finch Tavern restaurant in Croton Falls, New York.[16]
