A solo jazz piano style that arose after 1910 in Harlem, New York, largely derived from ragtime, adapting ragtime's left-hand patterns to form the distinctive ‘stride bass’. The style generally called for fast tempos, use of the piano's full range and many pianistic devices.



Dictionary of Dance: Strider

Modern dance group founded by Richard Alston in 1972. Featuring choreography by himself, Jacky Lansley, Sally Potter, and others, it was one of the first small-scale independent dance groups in the UK and had a seminal influence on the development of modern dance. It folded in 1975 and was a forerunner to Second Stride.
