Striking Distance is a 1993 film starring Bruce Willis, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dennis Farina, and Tom Sizemore as Pittsburgh Police officers pursuing a serial killer. It was directed by Rowdy Herrington and written by Herrington and Marty Kaplan. The film was shot on location throughout Pittsburgh; its early title was Three Rivers.
Plot
Tom Hardy (Willis), a police officer in Pittsburgh, is locked in conflict with his uncle, Nick DeTillo (Farina). Hardy comes from a family of cops and has just broken the cardinal rule: he has "ratted out" his partner and cousin, Jimmy DeTillo (Robert Pastorelli), for using excessive force on a suspect. The younger DeTillo subsequently jumps off a bridge to his apparent death.
Meanwhile, a serial killer is on the loose. When Tom and his father Vince corner the killer, a big chase ensues in which Vince is killed. A suspect is brought in whom Tom doesn't believe is guilty, but Tom's colleagues dismiss his protests. He is subsequently demoted to river rescue officer.
Two years later, the killer returns, but the police believe the murders are the work of a copycat murderer. Tom and his new partner — and eventual lover — Jo Christman (Parker), set out to stop the killer, but meet with resistance from the police leadership, who have never forgiven Tom for informing on his partner.
The killer is eventually revealed as Jimmy DeTillo, who faked his own death. He kidnaps Tommy, Jo and his brother Danny (Sizemore) and ties them up in the family's old cabin. He reveals that his father found out that he was the killer, but let him escape, and accidentally killed Vince when he tried to arrest Jimmy. Just then, Nick arrives and tries to reason with his son — to no avail, as Jimmy shoots and kills his own father. Jimmy then tries to escape in a speedboat, with Tom in hot pursuit. The struggle ends when Tom forces a taser into Jimmy's mouth, killing him. Tom is then reinstated as a police officer.
