(in molecular biology) the rigour with which the ability of complementary DNA sequences to recognize each other (and thus to hybridize) is tested. It is affected by temperature, ionic strength, and the presence of destabilizing agents such as formamide. As temperature is increased it becomes less likely that more distantly related sequences will hybridize; hence, high stringency is associated with high temperature. Low ionic strength also gives high stringency.
