(Fr. ètude)

An instrumental piece designed primarily to exploit and perfect a particular facet of performing technique. Before 1800 a variety of terms was used for didactic pieces, but the early 19th century brought a flood of teaching material aimed at the amateur and budding professional: the studies of Cramer, the earlier parts of Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum, Moscheles's Studien op.70 and the many collections of Czerny. The origins of the concert study, intended as much for public performance as for private instruction, can be traced to Liszt's Etude en 12 exercises (c 1827), revised as the Grandes ètudes (1839) and again as the Etudes d′èxècution transcendante (1852). Meanwhile Chopin had revealed the poetic possibility of the study in his opp. 10 and 25, each including 12 pieces. Piano studies in sets of 12 were also published by Alkan (two sets, covering all 24 keys) and Debussy. Studies for many other instruments have been written in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the word ‘study’ (or its equivalents in other languages) has been used in the titles of numerous orchestral works, including Stravinsky's Quatre ètudes pour orchestre (1929) and Rawsthorne's Symphonic Studies (1939).
