A karoo is a high, arid plateau in South Africa, and can be a generic term for this type of land. Karoos are dry with sparse vegetation. It is often part of a place name, as in the Central Karoo and the Little Karoo. The word "karoo" comes from a local word meaning "hard" or "dry."
