Egypt was one of the major powers of the world from its unification (in 3100 B.C.E.) to the Persian Conquest of Egypt (in around 450 B.C.E.) excepting the Intermediate Periods when it was conquered by other states. Egypt has hosted powerful states since the Persian Conquest such as the Fatimid Caliphate, the Mamluk Sultanate, the Khedivite Sultanate, and the Modern Arab Republic of Egypt. However, none of these later states had the type of worldwide power that Ancient Egypt was known for and were, at the most, regional powers.

In 1517, the Ottoman Sultanate conquered the Mamluk Sultanate and acquired all of its territories.
