Biography

As Sun Electric, Germans Max Loderbauer (the son of a composer) and Tom Thiel (a studio engineer) marry dizzying Teutonic trance with chilled-out ambience. They first met at the studio where Thiel worked, and the two later played as part of the band Fisherman's Friend. Manager Thomas Fehlmann, a frequent Orb co-worker, encouraged the two to move to his native Berlin and form a band. The two agreed, and when their debut single "O Locco" appeared, it was picked up by the Orb's Alex Paterson for his Wau! Mr. Modo label. The duo then signed to ZTT, who unfortunately wanted an electro-pop group. After wrangling out of the contract, Sun Electric signed to the Apollo sublabel of R&S and released their debut album, 1995's Kitchen. The following year brought a live album recorded at Berlin's Love Parade, while Via Nostra appeared in 1998. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Sun Electric is the name of an electronic music group from Berlin. Their first release was the single "O'Locco" on the Wau! Mr. Modo label in 1990, and they have considerable body of work released via the R&S / Apollo labels throughout the following decade. Sun Electric have been active and influential within techno, trance, ambient and IDM genres. Alongside fellow prescient acts like Björk, Orbital and Future Sound of London, they are known as one of the pioneers of IDM in Europe, having pushed the frontiers of their unique brand of electronica in the early 1990s, before the genre was even officially fathered later in the decade.

Principal members of the band are Tom Thiel and Max Loderbauer. Assuming a vague role as Executive Producer on all their releases is Thomas Fehlmann. Notable releases include Kitchen (1993), Aaah! (1994), 30.7.94 Live (1994), Present (1996), and Via Nostra (1999). Sun Electric have also recorded under the name S.E. Berlin.

Sun Electric have worked with graphic artist and videographer Nick Philip; "Meccano", created for MTV's Amp, was the first video played on that show.[1]
