The degree to which a sunscreen, suntan lotion, or similar preparation protects the skin from ultraviolet rays, usually expressed numerically.

SPF

An indicator on a sunscreen product of the relative degree of protection it provides against sunburn, compared to using no sunscreen. A product with an SPF of 15, for example, allows a person to be exposed to the sun, on average, fifteen times longer than if no sunscreen were applied.

The ratio of the minimal ultraviolet dose required to produce erythema with and without a sunscreen; a measure of the degree to which a sunscreen protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation, the higher the number the greater degree of protection.
