Wine Lover's Companion:

super seconds

An unofficial term referring to some of bordeaux's most lauded deuxième crus (second growths), some of which are so highly regarded that they're considered as good as (sometimes better than) the premier crus (first growths). Most times, the prices of the super seconds are less than that of their higher-ranking relatives. Some the most highly sought after super seconds Châteaux are Cos d'Estournel, Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pichon Longueville Baron, Leoville-Las-Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou, and Palmer (although the latter is actually a third growth, it's usually included in this group). See also Official Wine Classifications of Bordeaux, page 636.
