1. Extra charge imposed on those who purchase with a credit card instead of cash. Credit card surcharges are forbidden by the Truth in Lending Act amendments of 1975, which permitted discounts for cash payments.

2. Charge assessed by a Federal Reserve bank for access to the nighttime processing cycle of an Automated Clearing House commonly used by banks to move excess funds from Zero-Balance Accounts into concentration accounts for corporate customers.

3. Discount Window surcharge imposed by a Federal Reserve Bank, on short-term adjustment credit. Used in the early 1980s as a selective credit control to control inflation, the Fed's authority to use surcharges expired in November 1981.

4. Transaction fee for withdrawing cash at an automated teller machine. Such fees must be displayed at the ATM site.
