For approx. 400 years Romanian territories were under Turkish suzerainty.

There are three meaning for suzerainty:

1 - Power of a feudal lord.

2 - International Protectorate ( of a State over another state)

3 - Sovereignty

When, under the treaty of Berlin Bulgaria became an autonomous principality under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire, the Tsar(uncle of Alexander Battenberg) recommended his nephew to the Bulgarians as a candidate for the newly-created throne, and the Grand National Assembly unanimously elected Prince Alexander as Prince of Bulgaria(Knyaz)
