Swinburne University of Technology (known less formally as Swinburne) is an Australian public university based in Melbourne, Victoria. The University has six campuses in the state of Victoria, and one in Malaysia. Its foundation campus is located in the inner-eastern suburb of Hawthorn.
Founded in 1908 by engineer and politician, The Hon. George Swinburne, as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College, it changed its name to Swinburne Technical College in 1913, to honour its founder. In 1992, the College was granted official public university status and became known as Swinburne University of Technology.[3]
The 2009 Good Universities Guide of Australia ranked Swinburne the best in Melbourne for teaching quality, equal best for graduate satisfaction, along with a five-star rating for cultural diversity.[4] Swinburne is also ranked in the 401-500 range from THE - QS World University Rankings in 2008 and 2009 Swinburne's ranking in THE - QS World University Rankings .
According to the 2009 ARWU ranking that emphasises on research output, Swinburne is ranked globally in the 402-501 range, cohesively in the Asia/Pacific region with the 68-106 range and Swinburne is ranked 14-17 overall in Australia, which is released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in People's Republic of China. Swinburne is the host university for Australia's national circus school, the National Institute of Circus Arts.[5]

History
Swinburne was established as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne in 1908. By 1913, the institution had changed its name to Swinburne Technical College to commemorate its founder [6]. Both a boys' and girls' technical school and were soon established. In 1965 Swinburne became affiliated with the Victoria Institute of Colleges. The technical schools were taken over by the Victorian Education Department in 1969, however the college remained a separate institution.
Between 1976-78 extensive reorganisation of the Victorian education system took place. Under the changes of the Victorian Post-Secondary Education Act, Swinburne was conferred the power to grant bachelor degrees. The first of these were granted in 1981. Swinburne was proclaimed a University on July 1, 1992 and businessman Richard Pratt became the university's first Chancellor. Eastern TAFE was amalgamated with the university in July 1998, increasing the size of the university to six campuses. [7]

Campuses
Swinburne's presence extends to campuses in numerous parts of Victoria including Hawthorn, Croydon, Prahran, Lilydale, Wantirna, and Healesville. Outside of Australia, Swinburne also has a campus in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Hawthorn campus
Swinburne's foundation campus in Hawthorn is home to the University's central administration, many of its undergraduate and postgraduate programs, TAFE courses and short courses. It is also the site of Swinburne's research and training centres. Hawthorn is a dual sector campus and offers courses from pre-apprenticeship through to PhD level.
The campus is located seven kilometres east of the city of Melbourne, and is accessible by train and tram. Glenferrie train station is located on-campus, with the train line separating the north and south sides of the university. It is situated in the heart of Hawthorn and is close to restaurants, cafes and shops on Glenferrie Road. Facilities include a library, bookshop, cafeterias, sports centre and 24-hour access to computers and learning spaces.
The Hawthorn campus also has facilities for student accommodation, including single bedroom dormitories along with two-bedroom, three-bedroom or four-bedroom apartments. [9]
Hawthorn campus is home to Australia's first Graduate School of Entrepreneurship.
In early 2008, the university completed a series of renovations and landscaping projects at Hawthorn campus which saw one and a quarter acres of public space being created at the campus [10]. In 2009, the university opened the 'Project Hub' which provides a space for students to work collaboratively on final year projects. A new Advanced Technology Building is currently under construction and due to be completed in 2010 [11].
Academically, the campus primarily offers courses in Business, Engineering and Industry, IT and Science. The Hawthorn campus is home to Australia's first Graduate School of Entrepreneurship [12] and also houses some impressive research tools including one of the fastest supercomputers in Australia, [13] a 3D Virtual Reality Theatre [14], and a sensory neuroscience laboratory.
Prahran campus
The Prahran campus is located in the heart of Prahran, adjoining the iconic Chapel Street. It is close to several bars, restaurants and shops. The campus is close to trams and is in walking distance of both Windsor and Prahran train stations. Prahran is known as Swinburne's 'arts campus,' since it houses a number of arts areas including the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) and the Faculty of Design. The campus is a dual sector campus with both higher education and TAFE courses being offered. The Faculty of Design offers a range of film and television, graphic, interior, industrial and multimedia design courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. There are also graphic design, multimedia design, costume, performing arts and makeup courses offered at TAFE level.
In addition to the arts offerings, Prahran also has a range of programs in business, social sciences, and hospitality.
Sarawak campus
The Sarawak campus is in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The degrees offered at Swinburne's Malaysian campuses are similar in content to that of its Australian degrees.
International Partnerships
Students are given the opportunity to study overseas. In addition to its Sarawak Campus, Swinburne has over 50 partner institutions worldwide in 10 different countries. [15]. There are also a number of scholarships available. [16]
Research
Swinburne University operates research programs in several areas. As a medium-sized university, Swinburne has adopted a strategy to seek excellence in a limited number of areas. The University is strong in specialised areas of science and technology, such as radio astronomy, astrophysics, reliable software systems, service oriented computing, photonics & optics, social research, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, psychology and molecular simulation.
