There are two different ways to get to the same place. Ultimately you need to end up at the "System Profiler"

The first way is through Applications > System Profiler

or you can go to the Apple icon in the upper left of your screen, select 'About this Mac' and then when the dialog box comes up press the "More Info" button. That "More Info" brings you to the System Profiler.

Once in the System Profiler, you will see a list and what I think you are looking for is the second on the list "Model Identifier".
