Syzran

  (sĭz'rən) pronunciation

A city of western Russia on the Volga River west of Samara. It is a major river port and rail center. Population: 184,000.

 

 
 
('zränyə) , city (1989 pop. 174,000), S central European Russia, on the Volga River near its junction with the Syzran. The city is a major river port and rail center. Manufactures include leather, glass, chemicals, and wood products. Oil, asphalt, limestone, and slate are extracted in the area. Syzran was founded as a Russian military settlement in 1683 and was an important grain market from the mid-19th cent. until the 1920s.

Syzran (Russian: Сы́зрань) is the third largest city in Samara Oblast, Russia. It is located on the right bank of Saratov Reservoir of the Volga River. Population: 188,107 (2002 Census); 173,000 (1985).

Syzran was founded in 1683 as a fortress, as has existed as a town since 1796. One tower from the 17th-century fortress still stands.
