A city of western Russia on the Volga River west of Samara. It is a major river port and rail center. Population: 184,000.
Syzran (Russian: Сы́зрань) is the third largest city in Samara Oblast, Russia. It is located on the right bank of Saratov Reservoir of the Volga River. Population: 188,107 (2002 Census); 173,000 (1985).
Syzran was founded in 1683 as a fortress, as has existed as a town since 1796. One tower from the 17th-century fortress still stands.
