The twentieth letter of the modern English alphabet is represented by tinne [Irish, holly] in the ogham alphabet of early Ireland.

T, 20th letter of the alphabet. It corresponds to the Greek tau. It represents the unvoiced dental or, as in English, the alveolar stop. The diagraph th represents the characteristic English interdental fricative, voiced in this, voiceless in thing. For modern misapprehensions concerning older signs for the fricative, see the letter Y.

In genetics, symbol for translocation.

A cynical view of the world by Ambrose Bierce

the twentieth letter of the English alphabet, was by the Greeks absurdly called tau. In the alphabet whence ours comes it had the form of the rude corkscrew of the period, and when it stood alone (which was more than the Phoenicians could always do) signified Tallegal, translated by the learned Dr. Brownrigg, "tanglefoot."

Taw was the last letter of the Western Semitic and Hebrew alphabets, and probably represented a cross. The sound value of Semitic Taw, Greek alphabet Tαυ (Tau), Old Italic and Latin T has remained fairly constant, representing IPA: [/t/] in each of these; and it has also kept its original basic shape in all of these alphabets.
