Étaín

Achtan is a variant only for Étaín (2); sometimes confused with Étan [cf. Old Irish ét, jealousy]. Name borne by dozens of figures from early Irish narrative, history, and genealogy, the most celebrated of whom is Étaín (1), the heroine of Tochmarc Étaíne[The Wooing of Étaín]. St Étaín, patroness of Tumna, Co. Roscommon, is celebrated on 5 July. From the middle of the 13th century the name was common in the O'Connor, O'Hara, and O'Flanagan families.
