"Cupareo" comes from the Tarascan (Purepecha) language and means "Crossroads."

They were actual first known as and still refered to as The Purepecha'. the name of Tarascan was given to the indingenous by the Spanish Conquistadors when they surrendered in fear of a brutal take over like that of the Aztecs.
