Any person who is determined to bear the liability for a tax. In connection with the IRS and tax law, the term person includes an individual, a Corporation, a Partnership, a Trust or Estate, a joint-stock company, an association, or a Syndicate, Group, Pool, Joint Venture, or other unincorporated organization or group.

The person who is determined to bear the tax liability for a given transaction. I.R.C. §7701(a)(14). Under a variety of circumstances, the entity that directly engages in a transaction may not be the taxpayer with respect to the transaction. Thus, although a partnership may receive income, that income is taxed to the partner. See assignment of income.
