Telephone and Data Systems is a telecommunications service company providing wireless, telephone and broadband services service in 36 states to over 7 million customers through its business units U.S. Cellular and TDS Telecom. It also has ownership in Suttle-Straus a privately held printing company, TDS Telecom, a wireline telecom company with both ILEC and CLEC divisions. TDS owns an 80% share of cellular company U.S. Cellular, the sixth-largest wireless telecom service provider in the U.S.

TDS was founded in 1969 with the acquisition of Central State Telephone company in Wisconsin, the first of many local telephone companies it would acquire. In 1983, it established U.S. Cellular, which is now independent. The company acquired Minnesota long-distance provider US Link in 1994.
