Inflammation of a tendon sheath, due to irritation of this thin, filmy tissue by overuse of the tendons, which slide within them, or to bacterial infection. It is often an occupational disease, affecting tendons used in repetitive motions on the job. The tendon becomes swollen and red, with pain that increases on motion. The swelling hampers the tendon's sliding within, causing stiffness. Treatment involves immobilization with a splint, cast, or bandage and gradually increasing motion after inflammation subsides, which may happen sooner with corticosteroid injections. Repeated episodes can permanently thicken the sheath, limiting motion.

Inflammation of a tendon which usually becomes swollen, red, and tender to the touch. See also tendon injuries.

tendonitis

Inflammation of a tendon that usually occurs from overuse especially in those who perform one sport or movement regularly and intensely. The tendon becomes swollen, red, and tender to the touch; motion may be impaired by pain. Treatment may include rest and modification of tendon function so that the range of movement through which the tendon moves is altered (for example, a heel pad maybe used in cases of Achilles tendinitis). Surgical decompression maybe necessary. Treatment by injection of steroids such as hydrocortisone into the paratenon may be helpful, but injection into the tendons themselves can result in a tendon rupture. See also Achilles tendinitis.

Inflammation of tendons and of tendon–muscle attachments. It is one of the commonest causes of lameness. Tendinitis may be associated with a calcium deposit (calcific tendinitis), which may also involve the bursa around the tendon or near the joint, causing bursitis.
