Teplice

Teplice ('plĭtsĕ) or Teplice-Šanov (-shä'nôf), Ger. Teplitz-Schönau, city (1991 pop. 53,004), NW Czech Republic, in Bohemia, in the Erzgebirge [ore mountains] and near the German border. It is a road and rail hub and an industrial center in the heart of a lignite-mining area. In addition to coal, the city produces machinery, ceramics, glassware, and textiles. Teplice is also a famous resort and spa whose hot mineral springs were known prior to Roman times. A historic encounter between Beethoven and Goethe took place in the city in 1812. Industrialization dates from the late 19th cent., when large lignite deposits were discovered nearby. German forces held the city from 1938 to 1945, after which it was returned to Czechoslovakia and the German population was expelled. Teplice has a noted medieval castle.

Teplice (Czech pronunciation: [ˈtɛplɪtsɛ]; German: Teplitz until 1948 Teplitz-Schönau, Czech: Teplice-Šanov, archaically Töplitz) is a city of the Czech Republic, in the Ústí nad Labem Region.

Teplice is situated in the plain of the Bílina river, which separates the Ore Mountains (Czech: Krušné Hory) from the Czech Central Mountains (Czech: České středohoří), and is a famous spa town.

Czech inscriptions smeared by Sudeten German activists, March 1938, Teplice (German: Teplitz).

The thermal springs are fabled to have been discovered as early as 762, but the first authentic mention of the baths occurs in the 16th century. The town is mentioned in the 12th century, when Judith, queen of Vladislav II of Bohemia, founded a convent for Benedictine nuns, which was destroyed in the Hussite Wars in 15th century. Teplice figures in the history of Wallenstein, and is also interesting as the spot where the monarchs of Austria, Russia and Prussia first signed the triple alliance against Napoleon in 1813. Teplice was a German ethnic city before 1946 and the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia.

In 1994 Jaroslav Kubera of Civic Democratic Party(ODS) became mayor of Teplice and holds the position to this day. Many would argue that he brought the town back into a respectable position among Czech cities. Teplice has in the past been called Czech Republic's little Paris, although rising crime and unemployment rates in the region have damaged that reputation.

The local spas and professional football club are attracting tourists mainly from the middle east and other parts of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Teplice is the second largest spa town in the Czech Republic (after Karlovy Vary).
