Terence Donovan

Photography Encyclopedia: Terence Donovan

Donovan, Terence (1936-96), British photographer. Born in Stepney, London, he was one of a trio—the others were David Bailey and Brian Duffy—who burst on the world of fashion and advertising during the ‘swinging sixties’. Donovan's innovative use of the medium, coupled with a discerning eye and an understanding of the age, made him much in demand by magazine editors and advertising agencies. In the studio his technical expertise and feel for the quality of light and the moment led him, in his later years, to work on advertising films—first as lighting cameraman, then as director. In an interview he said: ‘All you can ask from human life is to get up in the morning, do the best you can, go to bed at night, and be as fair and uncruel as possible.’
