(geology) A reddish-brown soil overlying limestone bedrock.

A red intra-zonal soil developed in Mediterranean regions by the weathering of limestone. The soil has a clay-loam texture and its red colouration comes from the dissociation of clay to form iron oxide. Leaching during the winter rain makes the soil acid.
