n. (Abbr. T)

The unit of magnetic flux density in the International System of Units, equal to the magnitude of the magnetic field vector necessary to produce a force of one newton on a charge of one coulomb moving perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field vector with a velocity of one meter per second. It is equivalent to one weber per square meter.

[Etymology: N. Tesla; Austro-Hungary, USA 1857-1943] magnetic flux density, magnetic polarization. Symbol T. SI, Metric-m.k.s. Wb·m-2, i.e. a density of 1 weber of magnetic flux per square metre (= kg·s-2·A-1 in base terms).

The tesla was approved by the International Electrical Conference in 1954, and for the SI by the 11th CGPM of 1960.

 

The SI unit of magnetic flux density, equal to one weber per square meter. Symbol T.
