Thapa is the surname of a large social group of people of Magar ethnic group and Chhettri caste from Nepal. Over a period of time, this community has spread to many parts of the world.The surname originated during the Khas Kingdom in Karnali region during middle age-it referred to a position/post of a warrior( refer to The Khasa Kingdom,Professor Suryamani Adhikary(T.U.),Nirala publication and Sajha Prakashan)

Mugali Thapas (one of the many kinds of Thapas), are Lamichanne Thapas of pure Chhetri origin. The title "Mugali" originated after the wealthy and powerful Lamichanne Thapas came from around Pokhara to settle in Muga (a place near Dhankuta). Another kind "Gagle" Thapa is believed to be originated in Sindhupalchowk and some of them are in Jugu Nagar, Panauti and Balaju, Kathmandu.
