Plot

Fate brings a childless couple a bundle of joy -- who happens to have a criminal record -- in this comedy directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. Calvin Simms (Marlon Wayans) is a master criminal who with the help of his friend and sidekick, Percy (Tracy Morgan), plans a daring robbery of a museum where one of the world's largest diamonds is on display. One of reasons Calvin is able to get inside secure areas is his size -- Calvin is dwarf who stands less than two feet tall, and can slip in unnoticed where more conventionally sized people would not. While Calvin is able to get the diamond, he's nearly caught by the police while making his getaway, and stashes the jewel in a bag carried by a passerby. Eager to recover the diamond from the unwitting accomplice, Calvin and Percy figure out a way to get into his house -- they dress Calvin up as a baby, and leave him on the doorstep of the passerby's home. As it happens, the couple who live there (Shawn Wayans and Kerry Washington) have been wanting to have a baby, and they eagerly take the new arrival under their wing, embracing the joys of parenthood while ignoring some of the toddler's unusual behavior. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Review

If you thought White Chicks had a high implausibility factor, Little Man is off the proverbial charts. The Wayans brothers -- director Keenen and stars Marlon and Shawn, who split the writing credit among them -- are back with a comedy that proves what mental midgets they truly are. The movie is so suffused with political incorrectness, the viewer has almost no choice but to accept it as a running constant, and thereby, almost stop noticing it altogether. Little Man is offensive, and not just to little people. But its greater problem is that it's too obvious by half. The Wayanses have crammed in every possible joke about how a miniature ex-con would take advantage of going undercover as a baby -- let's not stop to ponder that concept too closely -- but haven't come up with anything truly surprising, anything that might provoke laughter among thinking people. Of course he looks forward to breast feeding. Of course he likes blaming his bad behavior on "grown ups." And of course he fears having his temperature taken rectally. The movie being so predictable tends to overshadow the problem that the scenario is utterly ludicrous. There's no way dozens of normal people would mistake Marlon Wayans for an actual baby, especially given his constant attempts to sabotage himself through unusual feats of strength, agility and intellect. Just how unusual they are changes from scene to scene. This movie can't decide whether he's supposed to play an infant, given the aforementioned nursing, or a five-year-old, given his unlikely participation in a touch football game. Keenen Ivory Wayans has enlisted a diverse array of sketch comedy veterans to help his brothers, including David Alan Grier, Tracy Morgan, Molly Shannon and Alex Borstein. But even their involvement leaves Little Man less fun than a bad case of diaper rash. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Plot

Calvin (Marlon Wayans) is an extremely short man who is a convict and a thief. With the help of his cohort Percy (Tracy Morgan), Calvin plots a museum robbery to steal one of the world's largest diamonds. After the successful robbery, the duo is almost arrested, but not before Calvin manages to stash the diamond in a handbag.

The thieves follow the handbag's owner to her home. There, they discover a couple, Darryl (Shawn Wayans) and Venessa (Kerry Washington), who are eager to have a child. Calvin and Percy hatch a plot to pass Calvin as a baby left on the couple's doorstep. Darryl and Venessa, wanting a child, immediately adopt the baby as their own. However, Venessa's dad Pops (John Witherspoon) has a bad feeling about Calvin.

A local goon, Walken (Chazz Palminteri), discovers the deception and demands the diamond from Percy. Percy sells out Darryl and now Calvin, in a series of comedic maneuvers, manages to rescue Darryl and have Walken arrested. They are given a substantial reward for the recovery of the diamond.

Before he leaves, Calvin thanks Darryl for taking care of him even though he wasn't really a baby. Calvin is about to be out of Darryl's life for good, as Darryl watches him leave. Calvin is crying hysterically, so Darryl decides to let Calvin stay around and from that point on, the two men become the best of friends.

The film ends with Calvin and Pops playing with Darryl and Venessa's new baby who looks exactly like Darryl (Shawn Wayans' face on a baby's body).

Production

Little Man was originally intended to be a sequel to the Wayans Brothers 2004 film White Chicks.

Filming began in the Vancouver area on October 17, 2005 and finished on March 1, 2006.

The scenes with Calvin Sims were played twice: once by nine-year-old 75 cm (2 ft 6 in) tall dwarf actor Linden Porco together with the other actors, and once by Marlon Wayans alone, using a "bluescreen" technique with a green background and green clothes. In post-production, Porco's head on the images was replaced by that of Marlon. Porco's body was painted brown in order to match Marlon's face. Shawn Wayans' face was also superimposed in one scene[citation needed].

Reception

British film critic Mark Kermode described the film as "the most retrograde, horrible, nauseating, inward-looking, smug, repulsive, grotesque, ill-advised, badly-judged film", "pure evil" and (perhaps jokingly) as "possessed by the devil". He further noted that the film's existence signalled "the end of western civilization as we know it."

Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an aggregate rating of 13% based on 86 reviews. The critical consensus is "Another gimmicky comedy from the Wayans brothers, Little Man comes with the requisite raunchiness, but forgot to bring the laughs".[1]

Box office

As of August 4, 2006, the film grossed $58,255,287 domestically and a total $101,589,216 worldwide. The film's budget was 64 million. [2]

Awards

It was nominated for seven 2006 Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Marlon Wayans & Shawn Wayans), Worst Actor (Rob Schneider, also nominated for his performance in The Benchwarmers), Worst Director (Keenen Ivory Wayans), Worst Screen Couple (Shawn Wayans & EITHER Kerry Washington OR Marlon Wayans), Worst Screenplay and Worst Remake or Rip-off (of the 1954 Bugs Bunny cartoon Baby Buggy Bunny). It later won three of the awards, Worst Actor, Worst Screen Couple and Worst Remake or Rip-off.[3]
