The initial source for the popular Prince of Denmark's March, long thought to be the work of
, is a seven-part suite for brass, winds, and percussion in the British Library of London. The untitled manuscript is the hand of
, a composer at the Drury Lane Theater of London in the late seventeenth century. In 1700, Clarke contributed a keyboard arrangement of this piece to a publication titled
.
The march is nothing musically extraordinary, even within the context of Clarke's own music, the originality and inventiveness of which is best experienced in the composer's sacred music, odes, songs, and keyboard works. Still, the tune has a certain gravity and regal pomp which has made it a favorite at weddings, church services, affairs of state, and other such occasions.
How the work came to be known as a "trumpet voluntary" -- which it is not -- and attributed to Purcell is a curious matter. An 1837 collection reprinted the piece with the attribution "Purcell?" Subsequent nineteenth century editions removed the question mark. In the 1930s, Sir Henry Wood made an arrangement of the piece for small orchestra which became well known through radio broadcasts, further spurring the work's popularity. Wood believed it to be Purcell's work, and even though the Clarke manuscript was already known to some scholars, the arrangement was published under the English Baroque master's name. For several decades the erroneous attribution persisted in various published editions and recordings; by the end of the twentieth century, the rightful identity of the composer seemed to have taken hold in most quarters. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis, All Music Guide
