Biography

A little-known group from Trenton, New Jersey, the River Styx issued a couple of singles in the late '60s and early '70s, the latter of which ("Holdin' for Me") made #10 on a Dover, Delaware radio station. When that's the pinnacle of your achievement, it's hard to even rate a footnote in the footnotes. Teenagers when they won an audition for Capitol in 1967, they recorded competent but derivative, unexceptional original material that reflected the British Invasion/psychedelic/blues-rock influences of the day, calling themselves the River Styx Blues Emporium for a while. Their scant discography was combined with some unissued songs for a reissue LP in 1996. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
