Biography

The members of the Used had to overcome poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse, not to mention the straight-laced attitudes of their hometown of Orem, UT, to bring their screamo-tinged brand of post-hardcore to life. But they persevered and earned a contract with Reprise Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in June 2002. Having only played a handful of shows around Orem prior to their record's release, the band -- vocalist Bert McCracken, guitarist Quinn Allman, bassist Jeph Howard, and drummer Branden Steineckert -- began relentless nationwide touring that quickly saw their fan base multiply. Club dates soon turned into successful stints on larger-scale festival/package tours including the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, and Projekt Revolution alongside Linkin Park and Snoop Dogg. In the summer of 2003, the Used issued the introspective CD/DVD Maybe Memories, which contained unreleased songs, live material, behind-the-scenes footage, and more. Their official sophomore offering showed up in September 2004 as In Love and Death, and the guys hopped on the first incarnation of the Taste of Chaos tour early the next year. Around that time, they also recorded a version of the Queen classic "Under Pressure" with My Chemical Romance to benefit victims of the devastating tsunami of December 2004. Boasting a fuller sound, In Love and Death peaked at number six on Billboard's Top 200 and the Used continued touring behind it worldwide. Outside of the band, McCracken has also lent his vocals to the punk rock drum troupe Street Drum Corps. As the Used readied their third album, Steineckert parted ways with the group over creative differences in early fall 2006 (he went on to join Rancid). The live CD/DVD Berth appeared in February 2007 to tide over fans a bit longer until the proper full-length, Lies for the Liars, came out in May. Though he didn't perform on the record, drummer Dan Whitesides joined the band as an official member just in time for the supporting tour. ~ William Ruhlmann & Corey Apar, All Music Guide

The Used is a rock band from Orem, Utah.

History

The Used formed under the name Strange Itch in 1994, the band consisted of Jeph Howard , Branden Steineckert, Joel Pack, and Matt Brown. The band put out one self titled album in 1998 and lasted until Quinn Allman took over the guitar in 1999 and at this point Strange Itch changed its name to Dumb Luck [1]. In 2000, an EP called The Naked Truth was released. Not long after the release, there was another line up change as Howard moved to bass and Bert McCracken took over the vocals. Dumb Luck was short-lived and the band changed its name to Used when Bert came into the line up. [2] At that point in time, Drummer Steineckert sent their songs to producer John Feldman from the punk group Goldfinger. After he heard "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" he called them in for a demo. In 2001, the band finished the demo and he got them signed to Reprise Records all within a few months of meeting them. In 2002, the band underwent another name change, as it was discovered a Boston band had already trademarked the name "Used" years earlier. It was then changed to The Used, since then The Used have released three studio albums: The Used (Gold), In Love and Death (Gold), and Lies for the Liars (241,090+).

Present Day and Future Plans

The band planned on releasing two EPs according to an interview in the May 2007 article of Blunt Magazine. It is unknown if this will actually come to pass.

They are currently the headlining band on the international leg of the 2007 Taste of Chaos tour. The band has been announced as the headliner for the inaugural "Get a Life Tour", sponsored by Kevin Lyman and set to run on college campuses in the spring of 2008. They also will tour North America in the winter of 2008.
