Greeks had sporting competitions such as the Olympics and the
Pythian Games held at Delphi. Athens had a festival celebrating
Athena with a grand procession and sporting competitions called the
Panathenaic Games. There was the
Dionysia which as a rural festival in winter and a city festival
in spring. There was singing, dancing, and plays during these
festivals. The Adonic feasts were a celebration for women honoring
Aphrodite and her lover Adonis. The Thesmophoria was a Greek
celebration of the story of Persephone and lasted for ten days.
They would sacrifice pigs and throw cakes in the shape of snakes
and phalluses on the fields to insure a good harvest.
