Biography

Hailing from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, Thirstin Howl III blends his considerable lyrical skills with an offbeat sense of humor to create his singular old school sound. Of Puerto Rican descent, Howl raps over dirty beats, in both Spanish and English, spinning out hysterical tales and impressing with his formidable vocabulary and wordplay. Howl founded Skillionaire Enterprises to release his own music -- along with the rest of his Lo-Life posse -- and his forays into other genres, like animation and fashion. The eclectic MC started making waves in 1997 when he won the Source's Unsigned Hype award and wowed crowds at the first Rap Olympics. His breakthrough single, "Brooklyn Hardbook," recorded with frequent collaborator Master Fuol, was released on Rawkus, but Howl was destined to remain unsigned. His self-produced debut Skillospher, featured contributions by luminaries such as Eminem and Mos Def and, though marred somewhat by its homemade, low-budget production, was well-received. He followed that effort with Skillionaire in 1999 and Serial Skiller in 2001. The latter was Howl's first professionally recorded album and also saw him take on the bulk of the production duties. Howl continued to build a strong following through his website, word of mouth, and, of course, his music. In 2002, his hard work paid off and Thirstin finally released a record on a large independent label. Skilligan's Island is on Landspeed Records and features a duet with Eminem. ~ Martin Woodside, All Music Guide

Delivery and Content

Taking his name from the Gilligan's Island character Thurston Howell, III, rapper Thirstin Howl III's rhymes are usually delivered in a nasal tone that veers between braggadocious and melancholic (regardless of his subject matter). He is considered a battle emcee at heart, and as a result, most of his material has an over-exaggerated, almost comic bent to it. Unusual for a criminally-minded emcee, Thirstin rarely raps about guns or murder, preferring instead to rap about petty thefts such as pickpocketing, shoplifting, mugging and burglary, and always in an absurdly melodramatic style (For example: "Stick you up with a safety pin or lit Roman Candles!" or "These fingers here could pickpocket a grass skirt!"). Also, as a founding member of New York's infamous Lo-Life gang, notorious in the 80s and 90s for only wearing Polo clothing or other brands of Ralph Lauren clothing that they would boost or steal, he would also include this fashion sense into his raps. He also often raps about his many baby mothers. He has since renounced theft and his later material contains far fewer references to shoplifting. His sense of humour and wit are notable in much of his material. Howl frequently utilizes a Spanglish flow in which English and Spanish words are blended within individual lines. Another characteristic trait of his rhyme style is the use of exaggerated pronunciation to create seeming rhymes among words that are not even near rhymes (e.g. "a socio with illegal negocios / 9 inch nail your coffin after it slowly close / make the Latin language sound similar to that of Portugal/").
