This Is It is a two-disc compilation album that features the music of American pop and R&B icon Michael Jackson, released October 26, 2009, on Epic Records. Its release coincided with the release of Michael Jackson's This Is It, a concert film documenting Jackson's rehearsals for a concert series of the same name.

The album sold 5 million copies worldwide in its first eight weeks of release, including 1.1 in the US.[10] This Is It is Michael Jackson's sixth solo No.1 album on the American Billboard 200 album charts. The album also topped the charts in 14 other countries.

Background and production

On March 5, 2009, Michael Jackson announced in a press conference at the O2 Arena that he was to stage 10 concert performances in a series titled "This Is It", suggesting that they would be the last concerts of his career. Due to extremely high demand, an extra 40 performances were added to the tour, totaling to 50 tour dates. Jackson suffered cardiac arrest and died in Los Angeles, California on June 25, 2009, just two weeks before the concert series was scheduled to begin.

On August 11, a judge approved a $60 million deal that would allow Sony to release This Is It, a concert film composed of footage and backstage material from Michael Jackson's final concert rehearsals.[11] On September 23, 2009, Sony Music Entertainment announced that it would release the single "This Is It", followed by a two-disc album featuring original album masters of classic hits on the first disc, and previously unreleased versions on the second disc. However, the single release was cancelled[12][13], and although it was previously listed on Amazon and other online stores, they have since removed the song from their websites.[14]

Music

The press release announcing the two-disc album describes it as a "stand-alone companion" to the motion picture.[15] The first disc consists of original album masters of some of Jackson's biggest hits, arranged in the same sequence as they appear in the film,[16] and ends with two versions of the previously unreleased song "This Is It". The song also features in the film's closing sequence, and includes backing vocals by members of The Jacksons.[17]

The second disc includes unreleased versions of some of Michael Jackson's classic hits.[17] It also includes a spoken word poem by Jackson, titled "Planet Earth"[17], which was originally printed in the liner notes of the Dangerous album. The compilation album has been made available on several digital music stores. However, both "This Is It" and its orchestra version can only be purchased with the entire album. Even though this has become an issue for some, there is also an additional EP that contains only the new tracks from the album titled Selections from Michael Jackson's This Is it.[18]
