Biography

A second-generation member of Hollywood's preeminent musical dynasty, composer Thomas Newman carried on his family's legacy through a series of Academy Award-nominated film scores. Born in Los Angeles on October 20, 1955, he was the son of Alfred Newman and the nephew of Lionel and Emil Newman, all three renowned composers and conductors from Hollywood's golden age; Thomas' brother David also followed in the family business, as did their cousin, the sardonic singer/songwriter Randy Newman. Thomas studied piano and violin as a child, following a two-year stay at the University of Southern California by earning a master's degree in music from Yale. Although his early musical theater project Three Mean Fairy Tales was championed by Stephen Sondheim, Newman spent the better part of the late '70s playing keyboards in the rock band the Innocents and the improvisational combo Tokyo 77. In 1983, he broke into the film industry by orchestrating a John Williams cue from Return of the Jedi, composing his first full score, Reckless, the following year.

Newman's ethnic-inspired score to the 1985 Madonna vehicle Desperately Seeking Susan proved his breakthrough, and he further honed his distinctive electro-orchestral approach on subsequent projects including 1987's The Lost Boys and Less Than Zero. Films including Fried Green Tomatoes, The Rapture, and Scent of a Woman followed before Newman earned a pair of Oscar nominations in 1994 for his work on The Shawshank Redemption and Little Women; a year later, he received another Academy Award nomination for Unstrung Heroes. Newman's fourth Oscar bid arrived with 1999's American Beauty, which did not win the composer an Oscar for best score, but the soundtrack album, released by DreamWorks, did win the Grammy Award in its category. Newman received further Academy Award nominations in successive years for his work on Road to Perdition (2002), Finding Nemo (2003), and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004). He won another two Grammy Awards for his theme for the television series Six Feet Under, best instrumental composition and best instrumental arrangement. His eighth Oscar nomination came with The Good German (2006). ~ Jason Ankeny & William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Biography

As the Barrymores are to acting, the Newmans are to composing, so it was no surprise when Thomas Newman decided to follow the family footsteps and become a film scorist, too. Still, it must have taken considerable courage, for his father, Alfred Newman, is one of cinema's greatest composers. His uncles, Emil Newman and Lionel Newman, are also highly regarded, and his cousin is quirky pop icon/composer Randy Newman. Even his brother, David Newman, is involved with music. But if anyone was up to the challenges presented by his family reputation, it has been Thomas Newman and he has become a prolific and highly respected composer in his own right. In 1994, he was twice nominated for the Oscar, one for Little Women and the other for The War. He was born and raised in Los Angeles. He launched his music career following studies at the University of Southern California and Yale, gaining experience with several bands. In 1984, he contributed his first few songs for the features Reckless and Revenge of the Nerds and wrote his first full-fledged score for Grandview, U.S.A. (all 1984). Newman has often worked with producer/director Jon Avnet, on such films as Fried Green Tomatoes (1992). A double Oscar nominee in 1995 for his work on Little Women and The Shawshank Redemption, Newman was subsequently nominated for his scores to Unstrung Heroes (1995), American Beauty (2000) and The Road to Perdition (2002). ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Life and career

Newman was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Mississippi-born Martha Louise Montgomery and composer Alfred Newman. He is a member of a film-scoring dynasty in Hollywood that includes his father, his uncle Lionel Newman, his brother David Newman, and his cousins Joey Newman and Randy Newman, (who is best known as a singer and songwriter) and his sister Emma Newman.

Newman was educated at Yale University, and began his film-scoring career in 1984 with his score for Reckless. His breakthrough came in 1994, when he earned two Academy Award nominations for his scores to Little Women and The Shawshank Redemption; he was the only double-nominee that year. His critical and commercial success has continued in recent years with his scores for American Beauty (winner of the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media), Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Pay it Forward, Erin Brockovich, The Good German and WALL-E.

Newman has composed music for television as well, including theme music for the series Boston Public and the miniseries Angels in America. His theme music for the television show Six Feet Under won two Grammy Awards in 2003, for Best Instrumental Composition as well as Best Instrumental Arrangement. Newman also wrote a commissioned concert work for orchestra, Reach Forth Our Hands, for the 1996 Cleveland Bicentennial. The Los Angeles Philharmonic has commissioned a new work by Newman to be performed by the Kronos Quartet and Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Leonard Slatkin, during the orchestra's 2009-2010 season.

At the 79th Academy Awards, Newman appeared in the opening segment by Errol Morris, jokingly correcting a claim that he had been nominated for and failed to win an Academy Award eight times: "No, I've failed seven but this will be my eighth."

Though they were not composed specifically for the film, seven of Newman's previous score compositions were included in Michael Moore's 2007 documentary, Sicko. Newman received a special thanks credit, in addition to seven individual song credits.

A portion of his song "Brooks Was Here", as composed for and featured in the film The Shawshank Redemption, is played in the background of the artist Seal's song "My Vision".
