Ten 100s; = 1000 or 1,000 or 1 000, the punctuation usually being omitted until a further digit is involved. The scale of thousands, showing US terms, then the distinctive traditional British and European terms, is set out in Table 55.

Table 55

It should be noted that the traditional British terms relate the Latin etymology to the powers of a million, while the American relate it to the powers of a thousand that multiply the basic thousand; e.g. the bi- (i.e. 2) of billion relates
for UK to (million)2, = 1 000 0002 = 106×2 = 1012,
for USA to (thousand)2 × thousand, = 1000(2+1) = 103×(2+1) = 109.

Despite the 13th CGPM in 1948 recommending the British/European forms, the American forms are the more prevalent, even in the UK.

However, they are yielding in either sense to expressions formed from the prefixes of the SI system (e.g. ‘megabucks’). The use of the old terms above a million in a scientific context is highly undesirable.
