In 1835, there was a conflict between Michigan and Ohio over the
port of Toledo. (It was almost an entirely bloodless war) In the
outcome, Ohio got the Toledo strip and the port of Toledo, mainly
because it was a state at the time and Michigan was a territory.
However, although it had to give up the Toledo strip, the U.S.
allowed it to become a state and granted it its current Upper
Peninsula. At the time, Ohio had a better benefit with having
Toledo. But, with the discovery of copper and iron in the Upper
Peninsula, as well as plentiful timber, Michigan gained huge
profit. So now, Michigan got the better deal after all.
