Word Origin: tote
Top

Origin: 1677

North and South already showed dialect differences half a century after the first speakers of English had arrived. Where northerners said carry, southerners said tote. In 1677, the soldiers of the Governor of Virginia were commanded "to goe to work, fall trees and mawle and toat rails, which many...refusing to doe, he presently disarm'd them."

Those soldiers were white, but much of the toting in the South was done by African slaves. So it is not surprising that tota and tuta, meaning "to pick up" or "to carry" in Bantu languages of west central Africa, have been proposed as precursors of this word whose origin is undetermined.

It has remained a regional or or slang word for most of its long life. But today tote is known throughout the English-speaking world thanks to the tote bag, an invention of about 1900.
