Who2 Biography: Trace Cyrus, Rock Musician

  • Born: 24 February 1989
  • Birthplace: ?
  • Best Known As: Lead singer for the band Metro Station

The brother of Disney TV star Miley Cyrus, Trace Cyrus is the singer and guitarist who fronts the punk-pop band Metro Station. A high-school dropout with tattoos of skulls and flowers spreading down his arms, Trace offers a teen image just slightly different from his sister's famously wholesome look. Trace and guitarist Mason Musso began playing together in 2006, and formed Metro Station the same year with drummer Anthony Improgo and keyboardist Blake Healy. The band released its self-titled debut album in 2007, and the single "Shake It" was a hit in 2008. Trace is the son of Leticia Finley and Baxter Neal Helson; Leticia later married country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, who adopted and helped raise Trace.

Trace has the words 'Stay Gold' tattooed across the knuckles of both hands. The phrase comes from the S.E. Hinton novel The Outsiders, and is inspired by a poem by Robert Frost... Trace is the biological half-sister of Miley Cyrus -- they share a mother and have different biological fathers.

Biography

While his half-sister, Miley Cyrus, enjoyed a meteoric pop career in the mid-2000s, Trace Cyrus earned his own accolades as the guitarist for Metro Station. Born in 1989, he received some early insight into the machinations of popular music by joining his stepfather, country artist Billy Ray Cyrus, on a series of summer tours. Trace later dropped out of La Cañada High School in California to focus on his own music, having already established a songwriting relationship with singer/guitarist Mason Musso. The duo formed Metro Station with the help of two additional musicians, and the band's electronic pop/rock found an audience in 2008 (nearly a full year after their debut album was released) when the single "Shake It" rose to platinum status. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

Personal life

Cyrus was born in Ashland, Kentucky. Cyrus's mother is Leticia "Tish" Finley Cyrus. His biological father is Baxter Neal Helson,[3] but he was adopted by Billy Ray Cyrus.[4][5] He spent the summers of his youth on tour with Billy Ray. Cyrus is the older brother of Miley Cyrus, the star of the Disney Channel original television series Hannah Montana. In an interview with MTV, he discussed recording with Miley: "Actually, I'm going to sing on one of the tracks on her next album. I can't say much about it right now, but we will be collaborating."[6] Cyrus has many tattoos on his arms and chest, including the words "stay gold" tattooed on his knuckles.[5] Cyrus once worked at a shopping mall in Burbank, California before dropping out of high school at La Cañada High School.[5] Cyrus briefly dated Disney singer/actress Demi Lovato; the two ended their relationship in July 2009 due to conflicting schedules, according to Cyrus.[7]

Music career

Cyrus in Melbourne, Australia in February 2009.

Cyrus is a guitarist and vocalist in the electropop band Metro Station.[5] He started the band with Mason Musso in early 2006 when their mothers set them up to do a jam together,[5] since Musso's brother Mitchel is a Hannah Montana cast member.[5] Columbia Records signed the band after an intern at the record label saw their MySpace page.[6] He appeared with Musso on MTV's Total Request Live on June 9, 2008. Their band along with The Maine were the two special guest acts on the 2008 Soundtrack of Your Summer Tour, co-headlined by Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte.[8] In September 2008, Cyrus made an appearance in the music video for Billy Ray's single "Somebody Said a Prayer".[9] He also co-wrote the song "Country Music Has the Blues" on Billy Ray's 2006 album Wanna Be Your Joe. The song features guest appearances by Loretta Lynn and George Jones.
