In the story "Scars of Honor", there is a ritual called swinging at the pole in the Cheyenne culture. The swinging at the pole is a private suffering used to pay a debt to the… spirits and gods of the Cheyenne culture, and can only be taught by a man who has suffered through the swinging. However, it is ritual that only one man in the tribe had undergone--a man called Charley Lockjaw. Lockjaw underwent this suffering as a payment to the spirits and gods because they spared his wife in the winter where she lost her child in birth and was sick. This is similar to the reason why Joe Walking Wolf underwent this suffering. One of Joe's friends, Tom Little Hand-- who joined the army in time of war, was wounded and Joe believe there was a possibility that this would help his friend recover. (MORE)
