TripAdvisor.com is a free travel guide and research website that assists customers in gathering travel information, posting opinions of travel related issues and engaging in interactive travel forums. TripAdvisor branded sites reportedly have over 25 million unique monthly visitors, 11 million registered members, 30 million reviews and opinions and 2 million candid traveler photos. TripAdvisor.com is part of the TripAdvisor Media Network, operated by TripAdvisor, LLC. TripAdvisor is an example of consumer generated media. The website services are free to users, who provide most of the content, and the website is supported by an advertising business model.[1]
Description
TripAdvisor Media Group operates 14 popular travel brands including TripAdvisor, Virtual Tourist, Cruise Critic, Seat Guru, TravelPod, Airfare Watchdog, Booking Buddy, FlipKey, Holiday Watchdog, Independent Traveler, Onetime, Smarter Travel, Frequent Flier, and Travel Library. TripAdvisor operates websites internationally, including in the U.K., France, Germany, Japan, India, Italy and Spain, and is headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts.[1]
History
TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000 by Stephen Kaufer. Original financing was obtained from Flagship Ventures, the Bollard Group and private investors.[2] The company was purchased by InterActive Corporation in 2004.[3] IAC spun off its travel group of businesses under the Expedia, Inc. name in August 2005.[4] In May 2007 TripAdvisor acquired Smarter Travel Media operator of SmarterTravel.com and BookingBuddy.com; SeatGuru.com; TravelPod.com; and Travel-Library.com [5] Also in May 2007, TripAdvisor acquired The Independent Traveler, Inc., publisher of Cruise Critic.com and IndependentTraveler.com [6] In February 2008, TripAdvisor acquired Holiday Watchdog a user-generated travel site in the U.K. [7] In July 2008, TripAdvisor acquired Virtualtourist, a travel website with reportedly over 1 million registered members and OneTime.com a travel comparison site.[8] In July 2008 TripAdvisor acquired a majority stake in FlipKey.com, a vacation-rental website.[9] And in October of 2009, TripAdvisor purchased Kuxun.cn, China’s second-largest consumer travel site and hotel and flight search engine.[10]
Criticism
TripAdvisor has been criticized for allowing reviews to be posted by anyone about any hotel, without needing supporting evidence.[11] In response, they claim that all reviews are screened by their staff,[12] and they have algorithms to detect abuse.[13]
