There are currently about seven hundred described "truly carnivorous" plants, with about 250 others speculated of carnivory or near carnivory.

There are flypaper traps (sundews, drosophyllum, byblis, triphyophyllum, pinguicula, ibicella lutea, etc.) which trap their prey through sticky mucilage. Several hundred species belong to this category.

Snap traps, (aldrovanda, dionaea, utricularia) trap their prey through bladders or folding leaves. This comprises of about 227 species.

Passive traps makes up the ramainder. This includes catopsis, brocchinia, sarracenia, cephalotus, heliamphora, nepenthes, darlingtonia, and genlisea.

Over all, about 18 genus.
