An atomic state in which two spin angular momenta of electrons combine together to give a total nonzero spin. A triplet state usually has a lower energy than a singlet state because of the effect of correlations of spin on the Coulomb interactions between electrons (as in Hund's rules). This can lead to substantial energy differences between triplet and singlet states.

A group of three notes to be performed in the time of two of the same kind or in the time of any number of another kind. They are indicated by a figure 3, usually under a slur; the same notation may be used to signify any triple-rhythm figure (such as a two-beat note followed by a one-beat note).

triplet, a sequence of three verse lines sharing the same rhyme, sometimes appearing as a variation among the heroic couplets of Dryden and some 18th‐century poets: or any group or stanza of three lines. Triplets occurring among heroic couplets are sometimes indicated by a brace, as in Pope's Essay on Criticism (1711):

Musick resembles Poetry, in each
Are nameless Graces which no Methods teach,
And which a Master‐Hand alone can reach.
The three‐line units used in terza rima and those composing the sestet of an Italian sonnet are more often referred to as tercets.

1. one of three offspring produced at one birth.
2. a combination of three objects or entities acting together, as three lenses or three nucleotides. See also codon.
